Will You Support A Public Safety Millage?

The City of Flint is exploring all options to generate new revenue to maintain a high level of public safety services in this community. One idea being considered is a Public Safety Millage. There are two proposals being considered.

One would levy an additional tax on real and personal property in an amount not to exceed four (4 mills). This would generate approximately $5M in the first year.

The other proposal calls to levy an addiitonal tax on real and personal property in an amount not to exceed six (6 mills). This proposal also includes the Flint Fire Department and would generate approximately $7.5M in the first year.

What are your thoughts on a Public Safety Millage? Would you be willing to pay more to maintain public safety services in Flint? You can share your thoughts about the Public Safety Millage proposals with Mayor Walling via email at mayor@cityofflint.com.

Below is the actual language of the two proposals being considerd.

Four (4 Mills) Proposal:
Shall Section 7.201 (A) (4) be added to the Charter of the City of Flint to authorize the City to levy an additional tax on real and personal property in an amount not to exceed four (4) mills for 6 years, from 2011 through 2017, for the sole purpose of paying for public safety services, including a city wide community police program and operation of a city jail? It is estimated that 4 mils would raise approximately $5,000,000 in the first year.

Six (6 Mills) Proposal:
Shall Section 7.201 (A) (4) be added to the Charter of the City of Flint to authorize the City to levy an additional tax on real and personal property in an amount not to exceed six (6) mills for 6 years, from 2011 through 2017, for the sole purpose of paying for public safety services, including a city wide community police program, operating a city jail, and provide fire department services? It is estimated that 6 mils would raise approximately $ 7,500,000 in the first year.

  6. No one in their right minds would support it for their is already new school and library taxes, new much higher water rates and after buying genesee towers and tax payers not being told when they would be paid back for that myself and a whole lot of other people i have talked to are not going to support higher taxes. santa clause is not coming to town. its time to trim the city budget and learn to conserve. Sincerely Santa Clause.

  7. mike the new tax would cost the average taxpayer between 6 and 7 dollars more a month. the schools tax is the same. And the water rates are beyond flints control. You cant whine for cops 24/7 and then say i'm not gonna spare the extra $7. We need this and it needs our support. Some things are worth paying for, despite illogical residents' oppositions.

  8. I will vote it down and all i need is a big dog and a shotgun and security camera speaking of cameras how come the city residents didnt get free cameras like the flint township residents did? the majority of crime is in the city and it needs to get its act together like saginaw and stop always raising taxes all the time and there needs to be more of a joint effort among all the law enforcment agencys to fight crime together better that might be a better plan, also there is a problem with the out of control youth that have nothing to do cept get into trouble, flint city is freaking out because of it, the community is in despair, you know it amazes me how no one wants to help much even the churches they need to get a lot more involved in reining in the kids and give them something to do and make them feel good about themselves instead of getting in trouble mabie take them an a hiking nature trip or make them feel like their worth something special, the churches some of them are just sitting back raking in the money every sunday, they sure have nice expensive churches and theres almost one on every block, now tell me how many times do you hear of churches making a major difference in the youth in america??? I just thought you would hear a different view ok so get a dog ok?

  9. mike......Saginaw passed 2 public safety millages. So in order to need to be more like Saginaw, we would need yet another millage which the administration is not proposing.

  10. Yes wage cuts is a big part of the solution, but increasing property taxes is not a good idea, people will sell their houses and buisneses will move out of the city, and it has already begun in michigan, flint will be a ghost town. the world economy has not fully healed and it all trickles down to the states and the towns and citys, when someone raises taxes then that will make someone raise taxes on everyone else so wage cuts are a big part of the answer.

  12. I find that the Mayor has lost all touch with the real world. He continues to not listen to what is going on out side of City hall that is protected by the police Dept being right there. The 16 homicides are going to make a New record for Dayne Walling as being the Mayor with the most homicides in the city of Flint two years in a Role now How is he going to get this problem fixed. I will tell you he is not going to get it fixed. he will allow the streets to go unprotected and the drugs that rule the streets will remain so that as the city Manager says the 1/2 the employees of the city can get there drugs this is crazy talk and I For one am sick of it. Put the officer back on the streets and get rid of you personanl friend appointees this city needs protection not more Dept heads.

  13. 20 minutes to never. That is the length of time it takes for the police to arrive when called. I have no problem supporting this 6 Mil thing but what good is it going to do if you can't depend on the police to do their jobs?
